The PSA is a registered trade union with the main objective of effectively protecting and promoting its members’ workplace rights and interests. The PSA is one of very few trade unions in South Africa which attends to the individual disputes of members free of charge. The PSA, as an organisation serving people, realises the significance of its role in respect of social responsibility activities. The ELRC is primarily established with the aim of maintaining labour peace within public education. This is achieved through a process of dispute prevention and dipute resolution. The ELRC is involved in initiatives to prevent disputes from arising within the public education sector. This is achieved through facilitating the process of constructive collective bargaining between educator unions and the Department of Education as employer. a Nurse who is sued by a patient for alleged negligence. The type of insurance cover is often referred to as 'malpractice insurance cover'. The PSA has secured professional indemnity insurance cover for its nurses medical technologist and health workers of R1 million per individual member per year at no additional cost to the member. The professional indemnity insurance cover is part and parcel of the PSA membership fee. This is a much more favourable cover that that of other unions that are offering, for example, cover of R5 million per member per year, but limited to R5 million in aggregate which means that once that R5 million is exhausted (by only a few claims) no further cover is available to any other individual member for a year!
