John Smillie Architects was established in March 2000 by John Smillie who has been practicing as a professional architect for 25 years. John Smillie Architects is currently working on projects in central Durban, Westville, South Coast, La Lucia, Umhlanga, Ballito, the North Coast, Pinetown and Hillcrest. John Smillie Architects provides professional architectural services in the fields of residential, commercial, industrial and educational buildings. John Smillie Architects uses state-of-the-art 3-D computer technology to create the Virtual Building, resolve problems during the working drawing stage, which is used to communicate during the design process, and provides photo-realistic marketing material if required.

John Smillie Architects is based in central Durban, South Africa, and is committed to creating appropriate solutions of enduring quality by engaging with our clients to understand their needs. We also believe in effective communication and take pride in producing quality drawings in both the design and construction phases, using state-of-the-art computer technology. He gained extensive experience in various project types during this time, in the residential, educational, hotel & leisure, commercial, and industrial sectors. John has been actively involved in Gordon Road Girls’ school over the years, as a member of the Board of Governors from 2000 to 2006, and the Gordon Road Girls’ School Educational Trust from 2007 to present. He is married with two adult children, and his hobbies include playing guitar and drums, squash and fly-fishing. Experience gained while working for 15 years at Seitter Boyd Architects. Dennis Boyd and Gerald Seitter were John’s mentors, and later partners, and these are some of the projects that John designed and managed while working at the firm. Alterations and substantial re-modelling of existing house on Durban’s Bluff. Design of corporate image and shop fitting details for all branches of Pentravel, country wide. Addition of complete new administration wing including offices, library and staff room. Addition of new entrance, offices, staff room, reception, and gallery to hall. Addition of new offices, staff room, entrance and gallery to hall. New remedial teaching facility including classrooms, therapy, library and counselling spaces.
