We have been screening and assigning tutors throughout South Africa since 1999 and recommend the following guidelines be considered when choosing an appropriate tutor.
1. CREDENTIALS
A tutor does not need to be a qualified teacher but s/he must have fully mastered the subject required and preferrably be familiar with the syllabus the student is currently studying.
2. A GOOD "FIT"
This is crucial as one on one tuition is very intensive and the learning is accelerated when the student and tutor "gel". This is why we ask so many personal questions of our clients before we select a tutor from our database and the reason we sometimes need to allocate a new tutor.
3. PATIENCE & PASSION
The best tutors teach in their spare time because they love teaching and seeing their students' marks improve through patience and creative teaching methods.
4. COMMITMENT & AVAILABILITY
Is the tutor able to come to your home? Is s/he available at the times you need and is s/he in a position to commit to continuing with the lessons for an extended period if necessary.
5. COMMUNICATION
Can the tutor teach in the language required and be easily understood?
6. PERSONALITY
The tutor needs to be outgoing and confident with good organisational skills
7. PRICE
Agree on a rate and payment terms before the start of lessons. The most expensive is not always the best, but be sensibly wary of the cheapest.
The benefits of using a tutoring agencyTutors are pre-screened and paid by the agency. The agency acts as a liaison between you and the tutor and can replace a tutor at short notice. Lesson co-ordinators are familiar with the tutors on their database and are trained to ask the right questions to facilitate the “good fit” for the student and his/her circumstances and unique learning style. The agency has connections and resources to assist tutors with study materials, professional advice and moral support. Do make sure the agency has a proven track record, pays its tutors timeously and is available weekdays, evenings, weekends and public holidays.
