Durban Girls’ High School builds on a proud tradition of embracing the challenges of new educational ideas and offers a secure, safe and caring environment with respect for personal dignity. It is a modern, innovative and vibrant institution where the individual needs of young women in Grades 8 to 12 are met. We ensure that all rooms, equipment and resources are maintained and updated when necessary. The Drama Wing boasts two large air-conditioned Drama Studios with a sound proof dividing wall. These two rooms can be opened up to form a theatre space. Girls’ High Gear opened in 1991 as a project of the Governing Body to provide a friendly and convenient, one-stop uniform shop right here on the school premises, to the learners and parents of our school. Profits generated from this venture are paid over to the Durban Girls’ High School Educational Trust. Durban Girls' High School has a long tradition of involvement in the community. For over fifty years a weekly charity collection has been arranged entirely by the girls, through which social awareness and commitment to the community at large is fostered. Most importantly we recognise the importance of developing self worth through a mentor system, many leadership opportunities and the development of life skills which will enable learners to assume their role as responsible and competent members of society in the 21st century. Apart from fund raising in our school, we support a variety of charities. Caring for our community is of utmost importance to us. Durban Girls’ High School was established in 1882, which makes us one of the oldest girls’ schools in South Africa. Throughout our proud history we have been committed to providing a holistic learning environment and we are now officially recognised as a School of Excellence and Influence by the Alan Gray Orbis Foundation. Our academic focus is based on the strong work ethic of both staff and learners. This is enhanced by state of the art technology and fully equipped venues which provide outstanding teaching resources. Our co-curricular programme covers over fifty sporting and cultural activities which are offered on both a competitive and social level. We actively promote healthy living through our wellness programme. Our motivated educators not only facilitate learning but also instill respect for a sound value system. We are fully committed to the development of every girl in a relevant, safe and caring, multi-cultural environment. We offer many leadership opportunities and have embarked on a leadership programme offering all girls the chance of participation in courses where leadership skills are discovered and put into practice.
