Karen Wilson traveled the globe as the official photographer for the Association of Surfing Professionals Dream Tour for 8 years. Karen’s passion for surfing and the ocean, her journalistic integrity and eye for beauty has helped her to create mind-blowing imagery of the world’s best surfers in the world’s most exotic locations such as Tahiti, Fiji, Australia and Hawaii. Karen captured Kelly Slater’s historic seventh and eighth world titles as well as numerous other memorable moments in surfing. She has had numerous magazine covers and graced the front pages of newspapers such as the New York Times, The Australian and Sports Illustrated to name a few. She also provides a media service for sporting events and now offers social media marketing strategies and online content management to small & medium sized businesses. Nasareen wanted a shoot with her husband and son and a few shots just of herself. They were all quite shy but soon warmed up to the camera and we were able to capture some lovely photos. If you're wondering why your photographer won't give you 'all of the images, even the unedited ones', or 'all of the RAW files', here are some of the main reasons why: Asking a photographer to hand all of the raw images from a shoot is akin to asking an author to present you with their book in manuscript format: unedited, unformatted, and including the paragraphs and chapters that didn’t make it, or asking a chef to give you all the left over ingredients used to bake a cake. While any photo needs to be properly exposed and well composed, there are adjustments and edits that need to be made in post-production. When you hire a photographer, you are not just hiring them to snap photos, but also for their expertise in editing and processing the images and presenting you with the 'full package'. which includes a sequence of all the best photos from the day that correctly tells the story. You need to trust your photographer to be able to do this and you need to keep this in mind when searching for a photographer for your event. Can you imagine being presented with all these thousands of images and you have to sit and sift through all of them, weeding out the ones that are out of focus, incorrectly exposed, eliminating the ones where eyes are closed or a subject is pulling a funny face or someone accidently walked in front of the camera. The photographer is also experienced in knowing which images will work in black and white and how to correctly edit each image so that they will print well. We set up the shoot when Austin was about 3 weeks old. Free food and booze (sometimes) are some of the perks of going to a wedding. But, no matter how close you are to the happy couple, this is not another night out with the girls (or boys) and so here are a few things you shouldn't do. You are there to celebrate with the bride and groom, not relive those wild parties you used to have together when you were both single and on the prowl. It was still dark outside, but the birds had begun their early morning wake up calls. My stomach had been churning in excitement since last night and even if I’d wanted to stay in bed, the adrenalin pumping through my veins would never have allowed me to. Every year, for the past 5 years, I’d look forward to this day. And every year, I’d anticipate the race, so proud that my father could run all the way from Durban to Pietermartizburg in one day. At 8 years old, that was equivalent to running around the world. So at the crack of dawn we’d trek down to the start line and join the throng of spectators all cheering on as the runners set off in the dark on the world’s toughest footrace. We, along with the rest of the crowds, would set ourselves up at various check points along the 89km’s of rolling hills to encourage the runners, pass out water and energade sachets and generally give our support to the courageous men and women who chose to embark on this painful challenge of the body and mind.
